Gold in Them Thar Hills? — There is Definitely Gold in Writing Ebooks
Given the present state of the economy, there are probably a lot of people who are wishing there were gold in them thar hills. What I do know is that there is definitely gold in writing ebooks, but that doesn’t do you a lot of good if you are still stumped for ideas to write about. You’ve brainstormed and made lists that will develop the content and chapter headings for a single ebook, so let’s see how you can create a stash of future topics.
What you need to do here is create a list of 5 or 10 interests you have. Those interests could be crafts you love doing, gardening projects you’ve completed, your grandmother’s recipes, Internet Marketing or “How-To” manuals on almost any subject. The list is actually endless.
Rank that list in order of degree of passion you have about each subject. That’s all you want on this list…personal interests that you are passionate about in varying degrees.
Pick the top 2 or 3 interests and start researching. Place each of the 2 or 3 topics at the top of a separate page and, as you research, jot down the interesting or useful websites (URL) you find and download free, PLR articles on the subjects you’ve chosen. Create folders for each of your topics and save the information you find or download in the appropriate folder. You are building a library of resources for future ebooks you want to write.
You can find out the amount of interest each one of your topics has by using any of the free keyword search tools. Google the phrase “keyword search tools” and take your pick. Doing a Google search on the various topics you have listed on your page will let you know how much competition you have. The number of hits Google finds for your subjects is your competition.
What you are looking for is a high number on the keyword search and a low number for the Google stats after searching for your subject. A keyword search with high numbers tells you there’s a lot of interest in your subject. Low Google numbers for websites about your topics indicates that there is low competition and room for your ebook to excel.
One of the most popular subjects on the Internet is various versions of “How To Make Money Online.” If that’s your interest, here’s a few suggestions for your consideration: Internet Marketing, Selling on eBay, Using Google Adsense and Adwords and How To Use Search Engine Tactics (SEO).
Other hot topics include health, gardening, losing weight, improving your appearance, activities for kids, crafts, collecting, pets, real estate, travel, the stock market, how to look younger, improving your love life.
People all over the world are looking for information on almost any subject that has anything to do with their personal life, like clearing up acne, losing their “love handles,” attracting mates or fixing their broken widget.
Fill that need with a well-written ebook full of content they can use to solve their problems and you will have a winner.

You’re right, Ron – having one’s own books out there, whether they’re converted PLR, self-authored or ghostwritten – is the key to making more money online – through the sales of the books, the affiliate commissions from links inside the books, the sales of OTOs from the book’s sites and from the added credibility your writings and suggestions have with those who’ve read your books!

Yes an ebook can be a profitable venture but the key id the research on the topic and potential customer to give them what they want in the way they want it.

Writing an ebook is impossible for me, I need to outsource it. Ideas enough.
So for time being I’m a PLR fan, rewriting and improving on the content seems something I can just manage.
Look for ever green subjects, they can last a lot longer.

Great post Ron. A good way to research you book is to start with the table of contents of related books on amazon. That will help give you a good idea as to the types of items you will want to cover in your book.

It has been said that a product is the true start to maintaining a good income online. And to pick the right niche can help you discover that gold in them thar hills.
Yes Ron, having your own ebook is definitely what everyone should be striving for. For those who cannot write, like myself, I have to stick with the PLR for now, until I can start outsourcing at least!
Who knows, I might be able to make it as an author at some point!
The key point is once you find your interests, you need to do the research first, before you start writing. You need to know that the niche that you are interested in is a viable niche to be in. Doesn’t do any good to write a book and try to sell it if no one wants to buy.
If you can pick the right niche and if it is an evergreen niche (something that will be around for a long time and doesn’t change much) you can find the gold in them thar hills.
Great post!
Hi Ron, your right about people wishing and looking for the gold in the hills. I live in Frank James country and people have looked for years and I guess it is still out there.
If there is a hill out there that has gold in it, I think it is spelled “work”.
Whatever the method. converting PLR, outsourcing, writing it yourself, etc., it will still take effort. But I have heard it said over and over again that you need your own product in order to really be successful online. And the best way is informational products, read ebooks. Thanks for a great post.
